How does the GPS work?
Any life change is a journey. There’s a starting point when your world begins to change, an end point when you think you’ve made it through, and a pathway between the two. That pathway can have twists and turns, roundabouts, and hairpin bends, or it can be a direct line from start to end.
The GPS consists of three key tools to help you on this journey:
The compass is a tool to plot your location on the change landscape and keep you on track with where you need to go next. It helps with approaching change as an experience rather than something to get through and tick off your list, and works hand-in-hand with the road map and travel guide to give you direction and move you forward, or slow you down as needed. I like to think of the compass as my sanity check-point: if I feel like I’m losing it or simply going nowhere, I come back to the compass and check in: where am I up to? Where do I go next? The road map is a five-step guide through change. Use the road map as instructions to work through from step 1 to 5, repeating any or all of the steps as many times as you need to make progress towards your end goal. Like any of the GPS tools, the road map can be applied to both simple and complex changes. The travel guide has two parts:
The travel guide is full of tips and activities that will help you work your way through change, with space for you to journal and take notes. A key point I learned along the way through change, is that ‘processing’ life change isn’t just a list of things to do, it usually involves a whole lot of soul searching too. The travel guide part of the GPS brings together the key areas of personal change and soul searching I’ve explored and revisited each time change has swept through. It gives ideas for following the road map and using the compass and implementing them your way. (I say ‘ideas’ because every journey is different and there’s always more than one way to do something!). The GPS as a whole gives you a systemised way to proceed through life’s challenging, confusing, and overwhelming moments. It isn’t the crystal ball you’d sometimes like to have in times of change, but its structure will give you reassurance when everything else seems out of control. Using the road map, compass, and travel guide, you’ll come to approach change (and life!) from a completely different perspective. Change is usually uncomfortable, it can even be a little (or a lot) scary, but with the GPS you have a strategy that keeps you on track, and in tune with where you’re at along the way. |
